Maika Elan | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesVietnam risks missing a self-established 2025 deadline to complete reforms that would enable it to upgrade its stock market to emerging economy status and attract billions of dollars in investments, three officials told Reuters. The government in July committed to aiming for an upgrade to emerging market status in at least one major index by 2025. But infighting is delaying much-needed market reforms, three officials familiar with the discussions said. Additional liquidity is seen as crucial for Vietnamese banks, which account for about a third of the stock market capitalization, to raise their comparatively low capital buffers, thus boosting financial stability. Index provider MSCI published in June a long list of reforms Vietnam needed to apply before an upgrade could be considered.

HANOI, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Vietnam's garment industry is expected to face a decline in orders from its key markets over the next two quarters, the country's textile and apparel association said on Monday, amid high inflation that is dampening global demand. The country is among the world's largest manufacturers for brands like Nike, Calvin Klein, Mango, Zara and H&M. He added however that exports this year were still expected to reach the target of $43.0 billion-$43.5 billion. The weakening of the dong currency has also added to the difficulties faced by some garment makers, as imports of their raw materials are more expensive, he said. But he added that exchange rate impacts are limited as the garment industry is now registering a trade surplus.
The container ship Emma Mærsk docked at the Dapukou container terminal of Ningbo-Zhoushan Port on August 21, 2022 in Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province. Teodoro said Vietnam's close proximity to China and cheap labor are reasons why Vietnam is considered a suitable alternative. Vietnam has taken the lion's share of the manufacturing trade away from China with an almost 360% increase in far-distance trade since 2014 — the year the country started to invest in its maritime and manufacturing sector. Malaysia and Bangladesh have taken apparel manufacturing away from China, according to MDS Transmodal, while Taiwan has seen a marginal uptick in metal manufacturing. Ningbo port hit by Covid policiesThe Port of Ningbo, the world's largest port and the third-largest container port, is the latest Chinese trade hub to see an impact from the government's "Zero Covid" policies.
